Couch Convoy

In progress

A co-op trucking party game. The game runs on a laptop or TV, friends join by QR code, and each phone shows a different role (driver, navigator, mechanic, spotter).

Four phones, four different jobs

Phones-as-controllers platforms already exist, so Couch Convoy does not lead with that. It leads with asymmetric co-op: every phone shows a different role, and the truck only gets anywhere if the four players talk to each other.

  • Driver. Steers by tilting the phone. The preview above follows your pointer instead.
  • Navigator. Sees the route the driver cannot.
  • Mechanic. Keeps the truck running.
  • Spotter. Watches for what is coming.

The game itself runs on a laptop or TV. Friends join by scanning a QR code; nobody installs anything.

How it is built

  • WebRTC carries input from each phone to the host with as little delay as the network allows.
  • Phone motion sensors drive the steering. On iPhone, motion access needs a tap and a permission prompt, so the game asks only when the driver chooses tilt steering.
  • Host-authoritative state. The laptop or TV owns the game state. Phones send inputs and receive what to show, so two phones can never disagree about where the truck is.

Input latency

Not measured yet. The figure will appear here once it has been measured on real phones, with how it was measured.
